Buildings and Grounds

Pat Ryan, Director of Buildings and Grounds - 716-646-1290 Ext.3104

Twelve months a year the Buildings & Grounds Department is at work to insure proper maintenance of all Town facilities and departments, as well as support and deliver general municipal services and recreation programs.

Playgrounds

The Town of Hamburg Buildings and Grounds Department maintains an extensive network of neighborhood playgrounds. The Town operates 36 such facilities encompassing over 1200 acres, and keeping them in good condition is the responsibility of our department. During the summer months crews perform continuous maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, garbage collection, and any other services necessary for the safe operation and excellent appearance of the Town's playgrounds.
In order to keep the Town's playgrounds up to date, each summer the Buildings and Grounds Department carries out several capital improvement projects to the playgrounds as needed. These improvements include painting, installing new equipment, and resurfacing tennis/basketball courts. These improvements, as well as construction of new playgrounds, are carried out entirely by our department.

Recreation Park-Nike Base

At the Nike Base site the Buildings and Grounds Department maintains 20 Soccer fields, 13 Lacrosse fields, 4 Softball Diamonds, one 90 ft. Baseball Diamond, one 75 ft. Baseball Diamond, the Dog Park, the Air Park, Dani-fit Outdoor Workout Center, BMX Track, and a Basketball Court. The Town Ice Arena is also on site and is maintained by the Buildings and Grounds Department as well.

Town Buildings

The Town of Hamburg Buildings and Grounds Department is responsible for the maintenance of nearly all town-owned buildings. This includes the Town Hall, Nike Site/Ice Arena, Golf Course, Town Park, Taylor Road Cabin, Senior Center/Adult Day Care, Seaway Trail Building, and Buildings and Grounds Garage. We also perform maintenance at the Hamburg Historical Society Dunn House, the Village Library and the Lakeshore Library. Cleaning, landscaping, and remodeling are just a few of the tasks that our staff undertakes at each of these sites on a daily basis. From snow plowing parking lots to mowing to assembling office furniture, our workers maintain the facilities that residents and workers use every day.

Signs and Signals

Our crew is trained in accordance with The New York State Manual of Uniform Traffic Safety Devices to ensure that stop signs, speed limit signs, and all other signage on Town roads meet regulatory standards.
The Town of Hamburg Buildings and Grounds Department also maintains 13 traffic signals at various intersections throughout the Town. Our crew replaces bulbs in these signals annually to prevent an emergency situation. However, our crews are on call 24 hours a day if a problem should arise with any of the Town's signs or signals

Frequently Asked Questions

When will my playground's grass be cut?
Grass cutting is a top priority of our department. Our mowing crews circulate throughout the town constantly. Rainy weather often delays us from getting to every playground in a timely manner. We ask for patience during periods of rapid growth, as playing fields receive our attention first. However, if you feel your playground has been unfairly neglected, please contact our office.

What should I do if a traffic sign in my neighborhood is knocked down?
If a traffic sign in your neighborhood is knocked down or damaged, and you live on a town road or are unsure, contact our office immediately. Damaged signs can pose a serious danger to public safety and our crews will be dispatched immediately to correct the situation.
