Marine Unit
The Town of Hamburg Police Marine Unit is responsible for marine law enforcement and boating accident investigation and management. Commanded by 3 Lieutenants (one being a physician's assistant and combat medic), the team has 3 Detectives and 8 Police Divers. Members of the unit are trained in Marine Law Enforcement, Underwater Death Investigation, Black Water Diving, Swift Water Rescue, Ice Rescue and Ice Diving. The Town of Hamburg has 10 miles of shoreline bordering Canadian waters. The unit utilizes a 20' patrol boat that was transferred from New York State Parks Police and refurbished. In May of 2007 the Town of Hamburg Police Department entered into an agreement with a local business and acquired 2 Yamaha Personal Watercraft which are replaced annually at no cost to the Town. The unit is also a member of A.L.E.R.T. (Advanced Local Emergency Rescue Teams) and on call to respond to any waterborne emergency when requested by any of the several marine units in Western New York and Canada.
Our primary concern is the safety of the residents in and along the Town of Hamburg.
