Housing Counseling Services
The Town of Hamburg Department of Community Development strives to assist its residents in many ways. The Town of Hamburg has one of the most progressive Fair Housing Law in New York State! To start, Hamburg's law has always had "Source of Income" protection for it's residents. This means that you cannot be discriminated against by any landlord due to the source of your rent payment. For example, if you have a rental "voucher", from an agency to assist you with your rent payment, it cannot be turned down by the landlord. Further, the Town of Hamburg was the first community within Western New York to pass "inclusionary zoning" within its Fair Housing and Zoning/Planning codes. This portion of the Fair Housing law is meant to include all persons together within new rental housing larger than eight units. No discrimination or exclusionary zoning laws are allowed to preclude persons of low or moderate incomes from any new rental housing greater than eight units. View the town's Fair Housing law (PDF).
Along with our Fair Housing law, we offer comprehensive housing counseling services to residents of the Town of Hamburg. These services include landlord counseling, tenant counseling, mediation of landlord-tenant disputes, plus many other issues. The Town of Hamburg has contracted with Housing Opportunities Made Equal, Inc. (HOME, Inc.) for this purpose. In person counseling is again available on the 1st Wednesday of each month between the hours of 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm within Conference Room Number 1 at Hamburg Town Hall, 6100 South Park Avenue (Room is accessible).
